Today, five decades after the 25 April Revolution, we need to reflect more deeply on the actions of the Portuguese military in the colonies at the time. The constraints arising from the new political situation led the mobilised soldiers to act in different ways, in surrenders, fighting or negotiations. The liberation movements also acted in equally disparate ways in a whirlwind of events that followed one another dizzyingly. Meanwhile, new forces were emerging in the theatres of operations.
The international colloquium From the Wars to Post-25 April: The Military in Territories in Upheaval - 2 to 4 April 2025 - will seek to analyse the role of the Portuguese armed forces and their adversaries from the time of the conflicts to the period of transition to independence (Guinea, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola, Mozambique and Timor); as well as to explore the entry onto the scene of new military actors (e.g. Cuba, South Africa) and assess the type of interaction maintained with the Portuguese military.
Deadline for submitting proposals: 15 January 2025.
Communication proposals, in DOCX, between 180 and 200 words, should be sent to guerra25abril@letras.ulisboa.pt by 15 January 2025. Proposals must be accompanied by a 100-word biographical note.
